Note to Seniors

SPECIAL NOTE FOR SENIORS!!!

Many senior citizens (65 or over) on fixed incomes are finding it more and more difficult to meet the increasing cost of living. Some help is available through the Michigan Homestead Credit and Home Heating Credit. Even if you don’t file federal or state tax returns you are still eligible for these credits.

The Michigan Homestead Credit is based on a percentage of total household income compared to property taxes due for that year or a percentage of rent paid during the year. Property taxes do not have to be paid when you apply for this credit. Many seniors like to file early and use the refunds to pay the taxes due.

The Michigan Home Heating Credit is also based on a percentage of total household income and heating costs. You do not have to know your actual heating costs to be eligible but the possible credit could be more if you use these costs.

If you have not applied for these or do not fully understand what they are about please contact Barbara Phillips, Treasurer, at the Pennfield Township office for further information.
